Liverpool face Manchester City for the second time in the space of three days looking to gain revenge after narrowly losing out in their last meeting on Sunday in the League Cup final.

City were 3-1 victors on penalties at Wembley, with goalkeeper Willy Caballero the hero, as they won the trophy for the second time in three seasons.

In the league, Jurgen Klopp’s outfit are 11th in the table, and they trail fifth-placed Manchester United by six points, who they face in the next round of the Europa League.

Losing the final means the Reds may now have to qualify for Europe through the Premier League, and they will be keen to start closing that gap to the sides above them as soon as possible.

Following a weekend off from the top flight, City will look to put their stuttering form right when they make the short trip to Anfield.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men currently lie fourth in the table, four points adrift of third-placed Arsenal and ten behind leaders Leicester, although they do have two games in-hand.

The Citizens lost their last two in the league against two of their title rivals – the Foxes and Tottenham respectively – but also took a big stride towards progressing to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 3-1 win against Ukrainian outfit Dynamo Kiev a week ago.

Team News:

Lucas Leiva and Daniel Sturridge both played in Sunday’s showpiece, but face late fitness tests if they are to take part on Wednesday evening.

Mamadou Sakho is also 50-50 after taking a knock to the head, as are Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel; Danny Ings and Joe Gomez are long-term absentees.

Joe Hart is set to replace Caballero in goal despite the Argentine’s match-wining display on Sunday, but Yaya Toure is doubtful because of a foot injury.
