Liverpool are reportedly closing in on the signing of Germany Under-19 international star Kai Havertz, according to Football Whispers.

The Premier League side, who suffered a 3-1 defeat to league leaders Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, have been strongly linked with the highly rated Bayer Leverkusen midfielder since the summer transfer window.

The 18-year-old, who has scored an impressive six times in just five international outings for Germany’s Under-19 side, has provided three assists in 10 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga outfit so far this season.

Havertz, who has been tipped to become his country’s ‘new Mesut Ozil’, has scored four goals in 38 first-team games overall for Leverkusen since making his debut against Werder Bremen in October 2016.

The report suggests Liverpool are set to land the attacking midfielder after welcoming the German to the club’s training ground, Melwood, back in October, with the likes of manager Jurgen Klopp, legend Steven Gerrard and fellow midfielder Philippe Coutinho greeting the potential new signing and his agent.

The player only put pen to paper on a new five-year contract with Leverkusen back in July, but it seems Havertz will soon be on his way to Merseyside, with the January transfer window open in 52 days time.
