Name: Roberto Firmino
Bought for a reported £29m back in the summer; you would not have blamed many Liverpool fans for perhaps feeling a little bit short changed given Roberto Firmino’s performances in a Reds shirt come the end of the calendar year.
But suddenly; the Brazil international has hit the ground running in 2016, scoring four goals and providing one assist to help Jurgen Klopp’s men push for that lucrative Premier League top four finish this term.
The 24-year-old; who arrived at Anfield from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in June 2015, found the back of the net just once in Liverpool’s first 20 league fixtures of the season, although it was one to savour during their marvellous 4-1 triumph at Manchester City back in November.
However January finally saw Firmino rediscover his goalscoring touch that prompted the Reds to cough up almost £30m for him seven months ago, a deal that made the Brazilian forward their third most expensive signing in the club’s 123-year history.
Firstly he struck twice in the thrilling 3-3 draw at Anfield against title contenders Arsenal; before recording another brace at Carrow Road last Saturday during their mesmerising 5-4 away victory at Norwich City, including an assist for Jordan Henderson’s strike.
Although Firmino is still only halfway towards his tally of ten goals in all competitions for Hoffenheim last term; his January exploits has seen him move just one behind Liverpool’s league top goalscorer Christian Benteke (6) within the space of a couple of weeks.
But with manager Klopp unconvinced by the towering Belgium international’s performances this season, the German boss looks more than happy to place his faith in Firmino’s fortunes up front to help the Reds go after qualification for the UEFA Champions League come May.
