Manchester City have made midfielder Nico González their fourth signing of the January transfer window.

The Citizens confirmed on Monday night that they had finalised the signing of the Spaniard just moments before the mid-season window slammed shut.

Sky Sports claims that City have met the player’s £50 million release clause in his Porto contract in order to sign him, which would take their spending for the January transfer window to £180 million following the arrivals of Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov.

Gonzalez, 23, is a product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy and also spent time with Valencia before swapping Spain for Portugal in 2023.

Since joining Porto he has played 68 times across all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing the same number of assists.

City’s announcement of their fourth winter signing revealed that the midfielder has put pen-to-paper on a four-and-a-half year deal, timing him down until 2029.

Guardiola has been without influential midfielder Rodri for much of the season so far

The Citizens were on the hunt for midfield reinforcements with Rodri currently sidelined with a long-term cruciate ligament injury sustained in September.

The Spaniard isn’t expected to return to action for some time, but his compatriot will provide Pep Guardiola with much needed competition for places in the centre of the pitch.

City have struggled in Rodri’s absence, losing seven of their 24 Premier League matches so far and falling down to fifth in the top flight table.

Gonzalez, meanwhile, has been in fine form for Porto this season and may establish himself in Guardiola’s first team imminently, such is City’s need for midfield reinforcements in the wake of their humiliating 5-1 defeat against Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday.
