Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League courtesy of a 2-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

Goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland gave Pep Guardiola’s side a comfortable first-half lead, and Ansu Fati’s second-half strike wasn’t enough to draw the visitors level.

The Citizens are hoping to win a sixth top flight title in seven seasons, having completed a remarkable treble last term by lifting the league title, Champions League and FA Cup.

The win over the Seagulls on Saturday ended a run of two consecutive Premier League defeats for City, while Haaland also netted his first goal since September.

Alvarez also continued his fine run of form, and it appears that City remain confident that the Argentinian will stay put in Manchester.

As reported by Football Insider, the Manchester outfit are confident that forward Alvarez will remain at the club despite interest from some of Europe’s biggest sides.

Alvarez has started the new season in sensational form

It is claimed that the Argentina international has attracted interest from Spanish sides Real Madrid and Barcelona, following a superb run of form.

The 23-year-old joined the Citizens from Argentinian side River Plate last year and has since made 63 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 24 goals and providing ten assists.

He has been particularly impressive in the early stages of the current campaign, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in 14 games.

Alvarez has thrived in the absence of the injured Kevin De Bruyne, operating as a second striker behind Haaland.

De Bruyne isn’t expected to return to action until 2024, which could allow Alvarez the opportunity to continue to impress.

In March this year, the Argentina forward signed a contract extension that is set to keep him at The Etihad until 2027.
