Bayern Munich booked their place in the last eight of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

The German club boasted a 1-0 advantage over PSG when they welcomed the French side to The Allianz Arena, and goals from Eric Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry ensured the Bundesliga champions progressed to the quarter-finals.

One player that didn’t start the match was full-back Joao Cancelo, who is currently on loan from Manchester City.

The Portuguese made a shock move from Manchester to Munich during he January transfer window, but it appears that his spell with Bayern hasn’t gone to plan so far.

According to Calciomercato via The Mail, Bayern have already decided not to sign Cancelo on a permanent basis when his loan deal expires this summer.

The 28-year-old had been one of City’s most important players over the past couple of seasons, but he left the club very abruptly in January, joining Bayern on loan.

Cancelo won’t be staying with Bayern beyond the end of the season

His time in Germany started well as he provided assists in each of his first two games for his new side, but things appear to have gone downhill since then and the defender was left out of Bayern’s starting 11 against PSG on Wednesday.

The full-back has only started two Bundesliga matches and it appears that he won’t be staying in Germany beyond the end of the season.

The report claims that the loan deal included a clause allowing Bayern to sign Cancelo for £62 million at the end of the season, but he will instead be returning to Manchester.

Despite Bayern’s decision, both Chelsea and Real Madrid are said to be interested in the Portugal international, who joined City from Juventus back in 2019.

Since then, the full-back has made more than 150 appearances for The Citizens, winning five trophies including two Premier League titles.

He started the current campaign as City’s first choice left-back, but fell down the pecking order after the World Cup, with the likes of Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji and Rico Lewis having all been used on the left of City’s back four.
