Manchester City were handed a huge boost on Thursday as manager Pep Guardiola committed his future to the club.

The Spaniard’s deal had been set to expire at the end of the current campaign, but the Citizens confirmed on Thursday that he had signed a two-year extension that will keep him at The Etihad until 2027.

City and Guardiola are hoping to win a record fifth consecutive English top flight title, but they already find themselves five points behind leaders Liverpool after two defeats in recent weeks.

Off the pitch, though, it appears that the reigning champions are eyeing a move for a Champions League winger.

As reported by Football Insider, City are interested in Sporting CP winger Maxi Araujo.

The 24-year-old worked under new Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim until the 39-year-old departed to take charge of the Red Devils last week.

Araujo has enjoyed a fine start to the season for Sporting

He has been in fine form for Sporting in the early weeks of the season, having joined from Mexican side Toluca over the summer.

Araujo has scored two goals and provided an assist in 12 games across all competitions for Sporting so far, and his performances have attracted interest from the reigning Premier League champions.

It is claimed that his form has put him on City’s radar, with the Manchester club now set to continue monitoring the winger’s development with a view to potentially making a move to sign him at some point.

Araujo is contracted to Sporting until the end of the 2028/29 campaign, which would put the Portuguese side in a commanding position during any potential negotiations.

The Uruguay international – who has been capped 19 times by his country at senior level –  primarily operates on the left flank.
