Manchester City missed the chance to extend their lead at the table after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Liverpool at The Etihad.

The Citizens went ahead through Erling Haaland’s first-half goal, before full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold levelled things up late on to earn the Reds a valuable point.

Later on Saturday, City were leapfrogged by Arsenal after the Gunners battled to a 1-0 win over London rivals Brentford.

Mikel Arteta’s side now sit a point ahead of the reigning champions, who drop down to second place.

Off the pitch, it appears that those in charge of City are planning a sensational move to re-sign a former player.

According to Football Insider, the Manchester outfit are interested in signing Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The Brazilian spent time at Manchester City after joining the club from Vasco da Gama in 2017, but failed to make a senior appearance for the Citizens before moving to Villa Park in 2019.

Luiz has attracted interest from former club Manchester City

Since joining the Villans, the 25-year-old has made 170 appearances for the club across all competitions.

This season Luiz has been particularly impressive, scoring five times in 12 Premier League games to help Villa sit fifth in the top flight table.

He has largely impressed since making the move, and it appears that City are now considering a move to sign the player ahead of the January transfer window.

The Premier League holders are said to be on the hunt for a central midfielder in January, as Pep Guardiola looks to bolster his options.

Al-Hilal star Ruben Neves, who joined the Saudi Arabian side from Wolves over the summer, is said to be another player being considered by the club.

As well as City, league leaders Arsenal are also said to be interested in signing the central midfielder in the new year.
