Manchester City moved top of the Premier League table on Saturday courtesy of a 1-0 win over Leicester City, before Arsenal returned to the summit by thrashing Nottingham Forest 5-0 on Sunday.

Kevin de Bruyne’s sensational free-kick proved to be the difference between the two sides in the East Midlands, despite their contrasting fortunes so far this term.

The reigning Premier League champions were without top scorer Erling Haaland for the match, with the Norwegian currently suffering from a knock to his foot sustained against former club Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

Pep Guardiola revealed after the game that, while Haaland will not be involved in City’s Champions League clash in midweek, the striker could return in time for their game against Fulham next weekend.

In the meantime, it appears that The Citizens are preparing to offer one of their other stars a lucrative new contract.

According to Football Insider, midfielder Bernardo Silva will be rewarded for his fine form with an improved new deal.

The Portuguese has been linked with a move away from the club in recent seasons and it was reported that Silva would be allowed to leave last summer due to ‘personal reasons’, but the midfielder ultimately stayed put in Manchester.

Now, he is set to be rewarded with a new deal as City continue to tie down their most important players to long-term contracts.

Silva’s current deal is set to expire in 2025

So far Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez and Rodri have all penned extensions, and City’s attention has now turned to Silva, the report claims.

Silva, 28, joined City from Monaco in the summer of 2017 and he has since established himself as one of the most crucial players in Guardiola’s squad.

The Portuguese midfielder has made 269 appearances for City during his five-year stint so far, scoring 50 goals and providing 56 assists in that time.

During the recent transfer window, Silva was linked with a move to Barcelona, however the La Liga side failed to stump up the cash to lure the player to Catalunya.

It has since been rumoured that Barcelona will renew their interest in the player in January, but City appear to be aiming to deter interest in the Portugal international by persuading him to sign a new deal.

The player has just under three years remaining on his current deal, however he will reportedly be offered a new five-year contract that will earn him a staggering £46 million in total.
