Manchester City’s pursuit of a record fifth consecutive Premier League title took a blow on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 by Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Citizens have now lost four consecutive games across all competitions, and already find themselves five points behind leaders Liverpool in the top flight table.

Manager Pep Guardiola will hope to see his side’s fortunes change when the Premier League returns after the international break, but the continued absence of influential midfielder Rodri could continue to hinder them.

With that in mind, it appears that one of City’s midfielder transfer targets could be sold in January.

According to Football Insider, Atalanta will consider offers for City target Ederson when the transfer window reopens in the new year.

The 25-year-old has been identified by those in charge of City’s recruitment as a potential replacement for Rodri, who will miss the remainder of the current campaign through injury.

Ederson is a target for Man City as they search for midfield reinforcements

Ederson joined Atalanta from fellow Italian side Salernitana two years ago and has since played more than 100 times for his current side.

He has been hugely impressive for Atalanta over the past 12 months, and his form has prompted City to show interest in signing him as a replacement for the injured Rodri.

While Atalanta are understandably reluctant to sell one of their most important players during the mid-season window, the report suggests that the Serie A outfit will be forced to consider big offers if they receive any.

Ederson’s contract with Atalanta is set to run until 2027, but the Italian side are likely to face a battle to keep hold of the Brazilian as his impressive form continues to attract interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The two-time Brazil international is capable of playing as. central midfielder or in a slightly deeper, defensive midfield role.
