Manchester City will hope to return to winning ways when they host Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Citizens have endured a dismal season so far and are on the verge of Champions League elimination after falling to a late 3-2 defeat against holders Real Madrid in the Champions League play-off first leg on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola will be desperate to see his side return to winning ways at The Etihad on Saturday, with City facing a battle to qualify for the Champions League next term having fallen out of the Premier League title race over the past few months.

City were busy during the recent January transfer window, adding four new signings to Guardiola’s squad.

Now, it has emerged that those in charge of City’s recruitment have turned their attention to a Bundesliga star.

As per Football Insider, the Premier League champions are now focussing on a move for Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder  Florian Wirtz.

Wirtz has been identified by Manchester City as a transfer target

The 21-year-old has established himself as one of the best in the world in his position over the past couple of years, but it appears that his impressive displays haven’t gone unnoticed.

Wirtz joined Leverkusen’s youth setup as a teenager and has since played more than 180 times for the club at senior level, scoring 56 goals and providing 62 assists.

He is under contract with the Bundesliga champions until the end of the 2026/27 campaign, but the report suggests that City are one of a number of top European clubs that have been monitoring the young German.

Fellow Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are said to be the frontrunners to land the player, who played an instrumental role for Xabi Alonso’s side last term as they won the Bundesliga title for the first time in the club’s history.
