Manchester United travel to East Anglia to face Ipswich Town on Sunday, in Ruben Amorim’s first match in charge of the Red Devils.

Having been appointed as Erik ten Hag’s permanent successor earlier this month, the 39-year-old officially took charge of United during the international break and will now take charge of his side for the first time at Portman Road.

He inherits a side that are languishing in 12th place in the Premier League table, and he will therefore be desperate to get off to a winning start.

Ahead of the game, though, it appears that the Portuguese has given the green light for Manchester United to attempt to re-sign one of their former players.

As reported by CaughtOffside, Amorim has given the green light to United moving for Lille midfielder Angel Gomes.

The midfielder was part of United’s youth academy for several years before departing to join French side Lille in 2020.

Gomes made his England debut earlier this year

He spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Portuguese side Boavista, but has established himself as a crucial player for Lille since returning to France in 2021.

In total he has played 129 times for the French side across all competitions, and his impressive performances earned him a first call-up to the England senior squad earlier this year.

Gomes made his Three Lions debut during a win over The Republic of Ireland in September, under interim boss Lee Carsley.

He has now played four times for his country at senior level, and United are eyeing a move for the midfielder who continues to impress at club level in France.

The report claims that United will face stiff competition for the 24-year-old’s signature, with clubs including Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Arsenal all interested in the midfielder.

European sides Napoli and Atletico Madrid are also credited with an interest in Gomes, who is currently in the final year of his contract with Lille.
