Manchester United have completed the signing of midfielder Manuel Ugarte from French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The Red Devils confirmed on Friday that they had finalised the signing of the 23-year-old, who has signed a long-term contract until 2029, which also includes the option for a further 12 months.

United have been on the hunt for a new midfielder for much of the summer transfer window and Ugarte has been their top target for several weeks now.

Ugarte had agreed personal terms with the Premier League side earlier this summer, and they have now completed the signing just hours before the window slams shut.

The Uruguay international joined French giants PSG from Portuguese side Sporting CP last summer and made a total of 37 appearances for the club across all competitions during his debut season in France.

Ugarte has joined Manchester United on a long-term deal

The midfielder lifted both the Ligue 1 title and the French Cup during his sole campaign in France, but he has now joined United where he will fight for a starting spot with the likes of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo.

He was deemed to be surplus to requirements in Paris, though, and has therefore been allowed to join United, who sold Scott McTominay to Italian outfit Napoli earlier on Friday.

Earlier this summer, Ugarte played every game for his country at Copa America in the United States, taking his tally for Uruguay to 22 caps at senior level.

Ugarte becomes United’s fifth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro.

The Uruguayan has averaged the second highest number of tackles-per-90 minutes of any player in the top five European leagues since the start of the 2022/23 campaign, and Ten Hag will be hoping he can add some much needed strength to his midfield.
