Portugal finish their preparations for the European Champions when they face Croatia on Saturday afternoon.

Roberto Martinez will take charge of the Iberian nation at a major tournament for the first time in Germany, and his side go into the competition as one of the favourites.

The 2016 winners have several Premier League stars in their squad, most notably Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

The midfielder finished a fine individual campaign by lifting the FA Cup last month, with the Red Devils defeating rivals Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley.

Now, it appears that United are trying to tie Fernandes down to a new contract.

As per Football Insider, the Manchester outfit are considering the idea of opening talks with the player over a new deal.

Fernandes will represent Portugal at the Euros this summer

The 29-year-old joined United from Portuguese side Sporting CP back in January 2020 and has since established himself as an integral part of the United squad.

In total he has made 233 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 79 goals and registering 66 assists.

Fernandes’ current contract with the Red Devils is set to run until the end of the 2025/26 season, but it does also include the option to extend by a further 12 months.

The player himself, who has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich in recent days, is said to be keen to stay put at Old Trafford and sign a new deal with the club.

He is also believed to be acutely aware that his next big contract may well be his final significant deal in Europe.

At present, Fernandes is one of United’s highest earners, alongside teammates Marcus Rashford and Casemiro – the latter of whom is expected to leave the club this summer.
