Patrick Dorgu’s fine volley earned Manchester United a 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Dane found the corner of the net from the edge of the box in the first-half, securing all three points for the Red Devils in this year’s only Premier League Boxing Day match.

The victory lifted Ruben Amorim’s side up to fifth in the top flight table, level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.

Now, with the January transfer window fast approaching, it appears that United are considering a surprise move to re-sign one of their former players.

As per Mail Sport, Man United are pondering a move to re-sign midfielder James Garner from Everton.

The report claims that United’s search for a new midfielder – and their struggles to finalise a deal so far – have prompted Garner to rise up their list of possible targets.

Garner, 24, left Old Trafford to join the Toffees in 2022 having made just seven appearances for the Red Devils.

United currently face uncertainty surrounding the futures of a number of their current crop of midfielders, including Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo.

Over the summer United attempted to sign a new midfielder, including Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, but they ultimately failed in their attempts to do so.

It is claimed that a new midfield addition in January is becoming an increasingly important topic of discussion for those in charge at Old Trafford, particularly amid injury lay-offs for both Fernandes and Mainoo.

Garner has made more than 100 appearances for Everton since joining the club, scoring three goals and providing six assists.

His contract with the Toffees is set to expire at the end of the season, and it is claimed that United therefore view him as a more affordable January target, with Nottingham Forest their top target for next summer’s window.
