Manchester United welcome rivals Manchester City to Old Trafford for the Manchester derby on Sunday.

The two sides have both started the new season inconsistently, with City losing two Premier League games for the first time in five years when they lost to Wolves and Arsenal earlier this month.

United, meanwhile, have been unconvincing but appear to have resurrected their season in recent weeks.

Despite largely failing to impress, Erik ten Hag’s side have beaten Brentford and Sheffield United in their last two league outings, and scraped past FC Copenhagen to record their first Champions League win of the season on Tuesday evening.

Going into the derby, reigning champions City sit second in the Premier League table, while the Red Devils occupy eighth place.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana has endured a difficult start to his Manchester United career, making a number of errors so far, but he saved a penalty deep into injury time against FC Copenhagen last time out to protect United’s slender 1-0 lead.

Despite his heroics, it appears that those in charge of the club are considering a sensational move to re-sign one of their former ‘keepers.

De Gea could make a sensational return to Manchester United just months after leaving the club

As per The Sun, the Manchester outfit could ask former star David de Gea to return to the club on a short-term deal.

Onana recently came out of international retirement and is set to represent Cameroon at the African Cup of Nations in January and February, which would leave United extremely short of options in the goalkeeping department.

De Gea left Old Trafford over the summer, ending a 12-year spell with the club during which he made a total of 545 appearances across all competitions.

He departed upon the expiry of his contract over the summer, despite United initially offering him an extension before withdrawing the proposal.

Now, United could make an embarrassing u-turn and ask the Spaniard to return on a short-term deal to fill in during Onana’s absence.

Since leaving Manchester, the 32-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs including several Saudi Arabian sides, but he is yet to agree a deal and remains a free agent at present.
