Ruben Amorim will take charge of Manchester United after the next international break.

The Red Devils announced on Friday that the 39-year-old had been appointed as the permanent successor to Erik ten Hag, with Ruud van Nistelrooy remaining in his interim position until then.

Amorim has guided Sporting to two top flight titles in the past four seasons, and also has his side top of the standings this term after nine straight wins.

His arrival at Old Trafford will likely be well received by United supporters, and it appears that the club could now look to sign a player from Portugal.

According to GiveMeSport, United are considering a move to re-sign defender Alvaro Carreras.

The report claims that United have the ability to activate a buy-back clause for the 21-year-old, who departed Old Trafford to move to Lisbon over the summer, having spent the second half of last season at Benfica.

Carreras never made a senior appearance for United during his time with the club, but the report suggests that United could look to re-sign him following the appointment of Amorim, who will be familiar with the Spaniard.

Carreras could make a shock return to Manchester United, just months after leaving the club

The left-back could add valuable depth in what has become something of a problem area for United, with both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia yet to make a single appearance for the club this term.

Carreras has made 13 appearances for Benfica so far this season, taking his tally for the club to 29 across all competitions.

He signed a contract until 2029 when signing for Benfica – in a deal worth up to £7.7 million – but the Premier League side could look to activate the buy-back clause that they included in the deal and the report suggests that Amorim’s appointment makes that possibility more likely.
