Chelsea’s hopes of reaching a third Carabao Cup final in four years are over after a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United in the last 16 on Wednesday.

An early Alexander Isak goal put the Magpies in front at St. James’ Park, before Axel Disasi put through his own net to double the hosts’ advantage.

Blues boss Enzo Maresca had made a number of changes to his side for the game, but his team were unable to find a goal and are therefore out of the competition.

Despite Maresca making a number of changes to his side, one player that yet again wasn’t involved was full-back Ben Chilwell.

The Englishman has played just once so far this season, and CaughtOffside claims that he could soon become a target for rivals Manchester United.

It is claimed that the Red Devils are looking at alternative targets to Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies amid their search for a new left full-back.

Davies may prove too expensive for United, it is claimed, and those in charge of the club could therefore instead look to sign the out-of-favour Chilwell.

The 27-year-old joined Chelsea from Leicester City in 2021 and won the Champions League in his first season at Stamford Bridge, but his time in the capital has been plagued by injury.

Chilwell has played more than 100 times for the Blues across all competitions, but he has fallen out of favour since Maresca’s arrival over the summer.

The Englishman’s only appearance of the season so far came as a substitute during a Carabao Cup win over League Two side Barrow, and the defender’s future is therefore very much in doubt.

United remain interested in Bayern’s Davies, the report suggests, but they will face stiff competition from the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona for the Canadian’s signature.

Chilwell could prove to be a more realistic signing, as he seemingly has no future at Chelsea under Maresca.
