Thomas Tuchel was officially announced as the new manager of the England Men’s national team on Wednesday.

The former Chelsea boss becomes one the third foreign manager to take charge of the Three Lions, following in the footsteps of Sven Goran-Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Prior to his appointment, several names had been touted as possible permanent successors to Gareth Southgate, who departed following the European Championships earlier this summer.

Ex-Chelsea boss Graham Potter had been linked with the job, while interim manager Lee Carsley was also touted as a likely candidate.

One name that was repeatedly linked with the job was Eddie Howe, and Newcastle United fans will be pleased to see Tuchel’s appointment as it means Howe is likely staying put at St. James’ Park.

Despite missing out on the England job, it appears that Manchester United had shown interest in Howe.

Howe has been linked with both England and Manchester United in recent weeks

According to Football Insider, Manchester United had been monitoring Howe’s situation at Newcastle with a view to potentially appointing him if Erik ten Hag was sacked.

However, the report claims that Howe doesn’t have a release clause in his current contract with the Magpies, which could make it difficult for Man United to lure him to Old Trafford as they would have to agree a compensation package with their Premier League rivals.

Howe, 46, signed a new deal with Newcastle earlier this year and the report suggests that there is no love lost between the two clubs following a drawn out saga that took place when sporting director Dan Ashworth moved from St. James’ Park to Old Trafford earlier this summer.

Ten Hag took charge of the Red Devils in 2022 but has been under huge pressure for much of his time in England.

The Dutchman is once again under increasing pressure following United’s disastrous start to the new season, during which they have won just three of 11 matches across all competitions.
