Manchester United booked their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday as they beat Championship leaders Burnley 2-0.

Goals from Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford gave The Red Devils victory and ensured that they will be in the draw for the next round, which takes place after Liverpool’s tie against Manchester City on Thursday evening.

United boss Erik ten Hag named a relatively strong line up for the visit of the second tier side, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Anthony Martial all starting the game.

In goal, Martin Dubravka made just his second start for United since joining the club on loan from Newcastle United.

There has been plenty of talk linking United with a move for a goalkeeper in January, and now one of the Premier League’s most in-demand players is said to be of interest.

According to Football Insider, The Red Devils have a ‘concrete interest’ in Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez.

The goalkeeper played a crucial role in Argentina’s World Cup victory in Qatar, and he has since been linked with a number of clubs across Europe.

The 30-year-old is contracted to The Villans until 2027, but he has been linked with the likes of Bayern Munich since his impressive performances in Qatar.

Martinez made a crucial save in the dying moments of Sunday’s final

Martinez made a pivotal late save during the final against France on Sunday, and then saved Kingsley Coman’s penalty in the shootout to help his side to victory.

Since joining Villa from Arsenal in 2020 for a fee of £17 million, Martinez has established himself as the club’s number one and is now regarded by many as one of the league’s best goalkeepers.

However, his future at Villa Park is believed to be uncertain following the arrival of Unai Emery as manager, as the pair have a tricky relationship that dates back to their time together in North London.

United are looking for a successor to current first choice ‘keeper David de Gea, who is set to be out of contract next summer.

The club do reportedly have the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, although they are yet to trigger the extension.

The club’s only other option in goal is Tom Heaton, who has made just one appearance for the club and is set to be out of contract next summer.
