Holders Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup by Fulham after a penalty shoot-out on Sunday.

The Red Devils had fallen behind in their fifth round tie when Calvin Bassey put the Cottagers ahead on the stroke of half-time, but captain Bruno Fernandes drew the hosts level at Old Trafford after the break.

Neither side could find a winner in extra-time, which meant the game was to be decided by a penalty shoot-out, and goalkeeper Bernd Leno was the hero for Fulham as he saved two spot kicks to ensure they progressed to the quarter-finals.

The West London outfit – who have never won a major trophy in their 145-year history – will now face London rival Crystal Palace for a place in the semi-finals.

United, meanwhile, will now focus on the Europa League which is their last remaining chance of winning silverware this term.

While head coach Ruben Amorim is still relatively new to his role, United’s results and performances have arguably gotten worse since his arrival in November, and it appears that those in charge of the club are eyeing potential replacements.

As reported by Fichajes via GiveMeSport, those in charge of United are considering an audacious move to make Aston Villa boss Unai Emery their new head coach, if they decide to part ways with Amorim.

Emery has impressed since taking charge of Aston Villa

Since departing Sporting CP to take charge at Old Trafford in November, Amorim has overseen just five wins from his 16 Premier League matches in charge.

The report claims that United’s chiefs are growing increasingly concerned at the club’s performances under Amorim, and have therefore started identifying possible successors.

Emery, 53, took charge of the Villans in 2022 having previously had an underwhelming tenure in charge of Arsenal.

He has since won 64 of his 124 matches in charge of Villa across all competitions, guiding the Midlands club back to the Champions League this season.

Villa remain in Europe’s top club competition, although they face an uphill battle to qualify once again as they currently sit tenth in the Premier League table.
