While there has been progression under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Red Devils still remain without a trophy since Jose Mourinho’s first season.

In spite of a terrible start to the campaign where they lost three out of their first four matches, United recovered and finished second behind the imperious Manchester City.

However, they suffered defeat at the hands of Spanish side Villarreal in the Europa League final, after David De Gea’s decisive penalty miss meant the La Liga side ousted the Reds 11-10 in a cruel shootout.

While even the staunchest critics would say it’s harsh to label this season as a failure for Solskjaer and his team, United fans will be tearing their hair out in frustration, especially when the noisy neighbours are reaping success every season.

According to reports from Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, United are set to react to their frustrating season by launching a charm offensive to sign Sevilla’s French central defender Jules Kounde.

Kounde’s performances have earned rave reviews, earning him a place in Didier Deschamp’s 26-man French squad for this summer’s Euros.

It is understood Kounde, 22, is one of Solskjaer’s preferred choices to partner Harry Maguire in United’s defence next season.

The Frenchman even dropped a massive hint saying “Regarding my future, it is certain that I will perhaps be brought to change this summer, but nothing is acted yet, I did not decide anything.”

However, it’s claimed that United are set to be challenged for his signature by Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona who are looking to refresh their squad.

It could be another tough summer transfer battle for the Red Devils.
