Manchester United visit Middlesbrough this afternoon (12pm kick-off) hoping to close the gap on the Premier League’s top four.

Jose Mourinho’s men dropped one place to seventh yesterday following Everton’s 4-0 victory over Hull City at Goodison Park, but the Red Devils have the chance to go back above the Toffees with all three points at relegation-threatened Middlesbrough.

The North East outfit parted company with manager Aitor Karanka on Thursday after a poor run of form, with Steve Agnew taking charge of his first game as first team boss this afternoon against United.

And they will face Mourinho’s men with the Portuguese having made seven changes to the team that edged past FC Rostov in the Europa League in midweek.

David De Gea, Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Michael Carrick, Maroaune Fellaini, Jesse Lingard, and Marcus Rashford are all recalled to the line-up, with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ander Herrera banned, and Paul Pogba nursing a hamstring injury.

And many United fans took to Twitter immediately after the team was announced to express their displeasure at Mourinho’s selections…

While several supporters bemoaned Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s exclusion from the starting eleven after his fine run of form…

However, there was positivity from some United supporters, who will hope to get the three points needed to close the gap on the top four…
