Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is set to remain in his role despite their disastrous Premier League campaign last season.

Many had expected the Dutchman to be dismissed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe after the Red Devils’ eighth-placed finish in the league, but victory over fierce rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final appears to have saved his job and The Guardian now reports that Ten Hag is in fact in line for a new contract at Old Trafford.

With the former Ajax boss’ future now seemingly resolved, it appears that those in charge of United’s recruitment are already on the hunt for potential new signings.

According to Record via The Express, the Manchester outfit have had a £51 million offer for Benfica midfielder Joao Gomes rejected.

The report claims that United are keen to bolster Ten Hag’s midfield options ahead of next season and have identified Gomes as a suitable target.

Neves has enjoyed a fine season for Benfica

Despite their substantial financial offer, Benfica are said to be reluctant to sell the 19-year-old and have therefore rejected the bid.

Gomes, who is part of the Portugal for this summer’s European Championships in Germany, has enjoyed a fine season for Benfica.

The teenager is a product of Benfica’s youth academy and has now played 75 times for the Portuguese side at senior level, scoring four goals and registering three assists.

Neves, who primarily plays as a defensive midfielder, made 55 appearances for the club across all competitions last season.

His impressive displays have attracted interest from elsewhere, though, and the Red Devils are interested in signing the Portugal international during the upcoming summer transfer window.

He is contracted to his boyhood club until the end of the 2027/28 campaign, but the report claims that Benfica are keen to extend the player’s deal.
