Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag will be hoping to see his side improve when they travel to face Arsenal on Sunday.

The Red Devils have failed to impress so far this season having struggled to beat Wolves on the opening weekend, before slumping to defeat against Tottenham Hotspur a fortnight ago.

United did defeat Nottingham Forest last time out, but they found themselves 2-0 down within five minutes at Old Trafford and had to come from behind to ensure three points.

The Gunners will undoubtedly provide a stern test for Ten Hag’s side, but United have been boosted by the arrival of a familiar face.

Veteran defender Jonny Evans has rejoined United eight years after first departing, the club announced on Friday.

The Northern Irishman has signed a one-year contract with United and will be part of Ten Hag’s squad for the remainder of the season.

Evans, 35, graduated from United’s youth academy more than a decade ago and was a regular for the Red Devils for a number of seasons before departing to join West Bromwich Albion in 2015.

Evans has made a shock return to Manchester United eight years after leaving the club

In total, Evans made 198 appearances for United across all competitions during his first spell at Old Trafford, and he returns having spent time with Ten Hag’s side during pre-season.

The Northern Ireland international left former club Leicester City earlier this summer following the expiry of his contract, having made 152 appearances for the Foxes.

He struggled with injuries last term, and was unable to prevent Leicester’s relegation to the Championship at the end of last season.

Evans will likely provide cover for Ten Hag’s first choice central defenders, including Raphael Varane who has been sidelined for a number of weeks.

The ex-West Brom man will be 36-years-old by the time his new contract finishes, and it remains to be seen whether or not he will make an appearance for United during the remainder of the current season.
