Four more sides will book their place in the last 16 of the World Cup on Thursday, with the likes of Germany, Belgium and Spain all looking to secure their progression.

England, France and the Netherlands are among the sides that have already had their last 16 ties confirmed, with The Three Lions set to face Senegal on Sunday.

France will be up against Poland, while Louis van Gaal’s side will face USA after topping Group A.

The Netherlands have started the tournament well, with forward Cody Gakpo particularly impressive throughout the group stage.

The PSV star has scored in all three games so far, and it appears that his performances haven’t gone unnoticed.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are in contact with the player’s agents.

Romano claims that PSV had initially planned to sell Gakpo next summer, however his sensational form at the World Cup has attracted significant interest and he could now possibly depart in January.

The 23-year-old has started the season in superb form for the Dutch side, scoring 13 goals and provided 17 assists in 24 matches across all competitions, making him the leading scorer in the Eredivisie.

A number of clubs are said to be interested in signing Gakpo, which could make it more difficult for United to lure him to Manchester.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has already raided the Dutch top flight for the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Tyrell Malacia, and it appears that he may now once again look to his homeland for reinforcements.

United are likely to be in the market for a forward following the shock departure of Cristiano Ronaldo last week, and Gakpo’s impressive form over the past 12 months could make him a suitable candidate.

Gakpo’s current contract with PSV doesn’t expire until 2026, so the Dutch side are under very little pressure to sell him any time soon.

If his superb form continues, his value will only increase and it may therefore be beneficial for PSV to keep hold of him for another season.

In total, the Dutchman has scored 55 goals and provided 50 assists in 159 games for PSV, having graduated from the club’s academy.
