Manchester United travel to face Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

Ruben Amorim’s side currently sit 14th in the Premier League table and, with just four games remaining, must therefore win the Europa League to qualify for European football next term.

The Red Devils will face a tough test in the Basque Country, though, with Bilbao arguably favourites to lift the trophy at their home stadium later this month.

Ahead of the summer transfer window, it has emerged that United are eyeing a move for one of the Bundesliga’s most highly rated defenders.

According to Sky Sports, Man United are showing interest in Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jonathan Tah, who is set to be a free agent this summer.

Tah is set to leave Leverkusen this summer

The 29-year-old joined Leverkusen from fellow German side Hamburg in 2015 and has since played an important role for his current side.

His next appearance for Leverkusen will be his 400th across all competitions, and he played an integral role for Xabi Alonso’s side as they lifted the Bundesliga last term for the first time in the club’s history, featuring 31 times.

Tah’s contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign, though, and the Germany international is expected to depart Leverkusen after a decade with the club.

The report claims that United are exploring a deal for the central defender, who has been capped 35 times by his country at senior level and is widely regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the German top flight.

There are doubts over the Old Trafford futures of current United defenders Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof, while Harry Maguire has also been heavily linked with a move away from the club in recent months.
