Manchester United travel north to face Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday evening.

The Red Devils have won just one of their last five games in the competition, leaving them 14th in the top flight standings.

Those in charge of the club’s recruitment will be eyeing potential new signings when the transfer window reopens in January, with United having endured their worst ever start to a Premier League campaign.

With that in mind, it appears that the Red Devils are interested in a Championship goalkeeper.

As per Ben Jacobs via GiveMeSport, United are interested in Leeds United’s Illan Meslier and could move for him if current ‘keeper Altay Bayindir leaves.

The report claims that Bayindir could depart Old Trafford in the near future, having played just four times since his move to the club from Fenerbahce last summer.

If he does leave, United could move for Meslier as a replacement, having identified the Frenchman as a suitable target.

Meslier has emerged as a surprise target for Manchester United

Meslier, 24, has kept 64 clean sheets in 198 games for the Whites across all competitions at senior level, conceding more than 270 goals.

The Frenchman has played more than 100 times in the Premier League, suggesting that he could bring valuable experience to Ruben Amorim’s side if he were to arrive as back-up ‘keeper.

Meslier is contracted to Leeds until the end of the 2025/26 campaign, but Jacobs claims that United are firmly interested in the player.

Despite United’s interest, Meslier is also said to have attracted interest from other clubs that may be able to offer him the guarantee of being first choice ‘keeper, something that he is unlikely to be assured of if he joined United.

It is also claimed that Meslier’s preference would be to join a club that would instate him as number one.
