Manchester United return to Premier League action when they host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils have endured a mixed season so far, with Erik ten Hag’s side currently sitting eighth in the top flight table.

United were also knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, but did secure progression into round four of the FA Cup courtesy of a 2-0 win over League One side Wigan Athletic on Monday evening.

Ten Hag will be keen to bolster his squad this month ahead of the second half of the season, and reports claim that the Red Devils are targeting a former Chelsea defender.

According to Football Insider, United are considering a move for Barcelona centre-back Andreas Christensen.

The 27-year-old joined Barcelona from United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea in the summer of 2022, and has since made a total of 52 appearances for the Catalan giants.

Christensen has attracted interest from Premier League clubs

During his time in London, Christensen played more than 160 times for the Blues and won no fewer than six trophies including the Champions League, Europa League, and FA Cup.

He added the La Liga title to his trophy cabinet during his first full season in Spain, and has since lifted the Spanish Super Cup.

Despite United’s interest in signing the Denmark international, the report also claims that completing a move for him this month could prove too difficult.

This is primarily due to Financial Fair Play restrictions, with United having spent heavily over the past few transfer windows.

United’s primary defensive target is still said to be Nice central defender Jean-Clair Todibo, but Christensen is said to be an alternative for the Manchester outfit if they miss out on their first choice target.

Newcastle United are also said to have shown an interest in Christensen, who is contracted to Barcelona until the summer of 2026.
