Manchester United will have Darren Fletcher in temporary charge when they visit relegation-threatened Burnley on Wednesday evening.

The Red Devils are currently without a permanent manager following the departure of head coach Ruben Amorim on Monday, and former midfielder Fletcher – who played more than 340 times for the club during his playing career – will be in the dugout at Turf Moor while their search for Amorim’s successor rumbles on.

Several names have already been linked with the vacant managerial role at Old Trafford, although it is currently unclear whether United will appoint a permanent successor immediately or find a caretaker manager for the remainder of the season, before finalising a longer-term solution this summer.

With that in mind, it has emerged that one of United’s former players is keen to take over at Old Trafford.

According to Fabrizio Romano, ex-Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in talks to become the club’s caretaker manager for the rest of the current campaign.

Solskjaer enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Man United as a player, scoring 126 goals in 366 games for the club across all competitions.

He won 12 trophies during his time in Manchester, with arguably his finest moment being his winning goal in added-time of the 1999 Champions League final, as the Red Devils completed a remarkable turnaround against Bayern Munich.

Solskjaer then returned to Old Trafford in 2018, taking charge of the Red Devils as caretaker manager following the departure of Jose Mourinho.

The Norwegian enjoyed a fine start to his tenure, winning his first eight matches across all competitions and overseeing a run of ten games without defeat.

He was made United’s permanent manager in March 2019, but was dismissed from his position in November 2021 following a run of just three wins in ten games, with the final match of his tenure a 4-1 defeat against Watford.

Romano claims that Solskjaer is in advanced talks to return to the helm at Old Trafford, with the former Norway international considered a serious candidate.
