Ruud van Nistelrooy has left Manchester United just days after guiding the Red Devils to a 3-0 win over Leicester City.

The Dutchman was named as interim head coach of United following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal last month, but United confirmed on Monday that he will leave the club with Ruben Amorim due to succeed Ten Hag permanently.

Van Nistelrooy played more than 200 times for United during his playing career, scoring a remarkable 150 times during his time with the club.

Having managed Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, he returned to Manchester over the summer when he was appointed as Ten Hag’s assistant manager.

When Ten Hag was sacked following a defeat against West Ham United, Van Nistelrooy was named as interim head coach and oversaw three wins and a draw during his short tenure in charge.

United defeated Leicester in both the Carabao Cup and Premier League, as well as drawing against Chelsea during the Dutchman’s time at the helm.

He also oversaw the club’s first win in European competition in over a year when United defeated Greek side PAOK 2-0 in the Europa League group phase.

United also confirmed on Monday that coaches Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel had also departed the club.

Incoming head coach Ruben Amorim has now arrived in Manchester but won’t officially start his new job until a visa has been obtained.

Amorim’s first match in charge of the Red Devils will be a Premier League clash with Ipswich Town at the end of November, while his first game at Old Trafford will be against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League.
