Goals from Amad Diallo and Joe Hugill earned Manchester United a pre-season win over Rangers on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag’s side had been beaten 1-0 by Rosenborg in their first game of the summer, but they picked up their first victory against their Scottish opponents in a game where new signing Leny Yoro made his first appearance for the club.

The defender became United’s second summer signing, following the acquisition of Joshua Zirkzee, but it appears that the Red Devils aren’t done yet when it comes to the transfer market.

According to German outlet BILD via The Mirror, Man United have made an opening bid for Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

The report claims that United have opened the bidding for the Dutchman, but their initial offer was some way short of Bayern’s valuation of the player.

The centre-back established himself as a top level player while working under Ten Hag at Dutch side Ajax, before earning himself a move to Juventus in 2019.

De Ligt didn’t make a single appearance for The Netherlands at Euro 2024

The 24-year-old spent three years in Turin, before joining Bayern two years ago.

Since arriving in Bavaria, the defender has made a total of 73 appearances, but the report claims that the German giants are willing to sell the Netherlands international this summer.

The Bundesliga side value the player at around £42 million, but United’s opening offer was said to have been worth around £29.4 million – made up of an initial fee plus add-ons.

It is also claimed that the Red Devils remain interested in the Dutchman and are likely to make another attempt to sign him, with those at the Premier League side hopeful that Bayern’s need to offload players could benefit them.

De Ligt’s current deal with Bayern is set to expire at the end of the 2026/27 campaign.
