Manchester United’s season went from bad to worse on Sunday as they were beaten 1-0 by fellow strugglers Tottenham Hotspur in North London.

The Red Devils went into the match in 14th place in the Premier League table – one place above Spurs – but James Maddison’s first-half strike earned the Lilywhites an important victory.

United have now won just four of 14 Premier League matches since Ruben Amorim took charge of the club late last year, and it appears increasingly unlikely that the Red Devils will qualify for any form of European football next term.

With that in mind, it appears that those in charge of the club’s recruitment are eyeing an audacious move for a high profile striker this summer.

As reported by Fichajes via GiveMeSport, United are plotting a significant offer for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The Swede joined Sporting from Coventry City in the summer of 2023 and has since played 86 times for the Portuguese side, scoring 77 goals and registering 23 assists.

Gyokeres could be the subject of an offer from Manchester United this summer

Gyokeres’ combined tally of 100 goals and assists since moving to Lisbon has attracted the attention of United, particularly as the 26-year-old played under current United boss Amorim until he departed to take charge at Old Trafford in November.

The report claims that United are prepared to make a ‘significant financial effort’ to land the Sweden international and could therefore lodge an offer of up to £75 million.

United are said to be desperate to bolster Amorim’s attacking options when the transfer window reopens this summer, and the Portuguese is a huge admirer of Gyokeres.

Their interest in the striker comes despite the club spending in excess of £100 million on Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee over the past two years.

Gyokeres is currently contracted to Sporting until the end of the 2027/28 season.
