The race for the golden boot award at the World Cup is hotting up as the competition moves towards the quarter-final stage.

France forward Kylian Mbappe moved a step closer to winning the award on Sunday, scoring twice as the reigning champions beat Poland 3-1.

The brace took Mbappe to five goals so far, although there are a number of players that have currently scored three goals, including Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Lionel Messi and Alvaro Morata.

Another player that has three goals so far is Cody Gakpo, who netted in each of the Netherlands’ group stage games.

The 23-year-old has impressed with his performances for club side PSV so far this season, and he has continued his fine form while on international duty.

Now, it appears that Gakpo could be on his way out of Eindhoven sooner rather than later.

According to The Sun, Manchester United are preparing an offer for the Dutchman, and PSV may be willing to sell him in January.

The report claims that the Eredivisie side are considering cashing in on the player during the upcoming transfer window, in an effort to maximise his value.

Gakpo scored in all three of the Netherlands’ group stage games

Gakpo has scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists in 24 games for his club so far this term, a tally that puts him top of the goal scoring charts in the Dutch top flight.

PSV are believed to be demanding £50 million for the forward, who is under contract until 2026.

United are confident that a deal can be agreed, though, as the player shares the same agents as Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag.

The Premier League side were considering a move for Gakpo over the summer, but ultimately decided to prioritise a deal for winger Antony.

The departure of Cristiano Ronaldo last month has prompted United to reignite their interest though, and the club are seemingly confident that they can agree a deal as soon as the window opens in the new year.

Several other clubs have also been linked with a move for Gakpo, including Leeds United and Everton, but it appears that Old Trafford may be his most likely destination at present.
