Manchester United are set to continue with plans to negotiate a new contract for David De Gea after the appointment of Erik Ten Hag.

The Spaniard, who is thought to be the world’s highest paid goalkeeper on around £375,000-per-week, is set to be out of contract next summer.

The Red Devils will soon open talks over a new deal, however, for a player who has been a rare positive for the club this season.

According to 90min, the Spanish international is set to be rewarded for his form this season with a new deal.

De Gea, 31, briefly lost his place as the club’s first choice ‘keeper at the back end of last season, with Dean Henderson preferred, but the former Atletico Madrid man has since regained his spot.

Rumours within the club suggest that De Gea will be announced as United’s player of the year for the fifth time in nine seasons, with the majority of his teammates having failed to impress this term.

De Gea has conceded 60 goals in all competitions this season

The ‘keeper has played every single minute of United’s Premier League campaign so far this term and, despite keeping just clean sheets, has certainly prevented Ralf Rangnick’s side from being even worse off than they are.

The report claims that, while the player’s current deal does have the option for a 12-month extension, those in charge of the Red Devils are keen to tie him down for longer.

There is a perception that his best years as a goalkeeper may still be ahead of him, and he will therefore be one of the players that stays put beyond the summer.

There could be as many as 12 departures from Old Trafford this summer, with six players set to be out of contract and a handful of others available for sale.

De Gea is believed to be excited at the prospect of Ten Hag’s arrival.
