Man United shirt announcements hint at De Jong move

Manchester United appear to have hinted at the possible signing of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong by announcing squad numbers for their latest signings. 

The Red Devils declared on Thursday that Lisandro Martinez would wear the number six shirt next year, while Christian Eriksen will don the number 14.

As reported by Sky Sports, that could be a hint at a move for De Jong, as the number 21 shirt that was previously worn by both Martinez and Eriksen has not been taken.

De Jong currently wears number 21 for Barcelona

The squad number was vacated by Edinson Cavani at the end of last season, and is also the number that De Jong currently wears for Barcelona.

As the report suggests, leaving the number free could be seen as a huge hint that United may still sign De Jong, despite reports stating that the player has no desire of joining the Old Trafford outfit.

Eriksen joined United on a free transfer after departing Brentford earlier this month, while Martinez followed him through the door at Old Trafford in a deal worth almost £57 million.
