Manchester United welcome League One side Wigan Athletic to Old Trafford in the FA Cup third round on Monday.

The Red Devils will be keen to progress to the next round of the competition, which represents their last chance of winning silverware this season.

After 20 Premier League matches, United have lost nine times, and they were also dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage.

Manager Erik ten Hag has also had to deal with a number of off-field issues this term, most notably the continued exclusion of winger Jadon Sancho.

The player hasn’t played for United since August after a public spat with Ten Hag, after the Dutchman criticised his levels of application in training.

Sancho then responded to his manager on social media, and was subsequently omitted from the United first team and hasn’t featured since.

Now, though, it appears that the player could be on his way back to his former club.

Sancho is expected to return to Borussia Dortmund on loan

According to BILD via 90min, the 23-year-old is closing in on a return to German side Borussia Dortmund.

The England international spent four hugely successful years with the Bundesliga side, before his £73 million move to United in 2021.

During his first spell in Germany, Sancho scored 50 goals and provided 64 assists in 137 matches across all competitions.

That form prompted United to sign the former Manchester City youth star, but his move back to Manchester hasn’t gone to plan so far.

In total, he has scored just 12 goals and provided only six assists in 82 games for United.

The report claims that Dortmund have ‘made a breakthrough’ in their bid to re-sign Sancho, with the star expected to join the German side on an initial loan.

It is also claimed that, while some details are yet to be finalised, the switch is expected to go through.
