Manchester United travel to London to face West Ham United on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils battled to a 0-0 draw against rivals Liverpool at Anfield last time out, having lost to Bournemouth and Bayern Munich in their previous two games.

Erik ten Hag will hope that the point picked up on Merseyside last week can help kickstart a good run of form over the festive period, starting with victory over the Hammers on Saturday.

In the meantime, it appears that one of United’s defenders could soon make a sensational return to his former club.

As per BILD via The Mail, centre-back Raphael Varane has emerged as a target for Real Madrid, the club that he left to join United back in 2021.

Varane has been linked with a sensational move to former club Real Madrid

The Frenchman made more than 350 appearances for Real during his time in the Spanish capital, and has also impressed since moving to Manchester.

In total he has played 77 appearances for the Red Devils and, after falling out of favour recently, he returned to the starting XI for United’s defeat to Bayern and also started the draw against the Reds.

Real’s interest in Varane is said to stem form the fact that a number of their current defenders are injured.

Austrian defender David Alaba has undergone surgery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury, while Eder Militao is also currently sidelined.

That has left Nacho and former Chelsea man Antonio Rudiger as the club’s only available senior central defenders, which has prompted the Spanish giants to start searching for potential reinforcements.

Varane’s current contract is set to expire in 2025, but it remains to be seen whether or not United would be willing to allow the France international to leave in January.
