Manchester United denied Liverpool the chance to move top of the Premier League by holding the Reds to a 2-2 draw on Sunday.

The Red Devils fell behind at Old Trafford when Luis Diaz scored, but goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo turned the game on its head and put the hosts in front.

United looked set for a famous victory, until Liverpool star Mohamed Salah converted a penalty to draw the visitors level.

The point moves the Reds level with Premier League leaders Arsenal, but the Merseyside outfit trail the Gunners on goal difference.

United, meanwhile, occupy sixth spot and look almost certain to miss out on a place in next season’s Champions League.

In the meantime, it has emerged that the club could allow a key player to leave this summer.

Varane is likely to leave Old Trafford this summer

As per Football Insider, central defender Raphael Varane is likely to be allowed to leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

The Frenchman joined United from Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2021, having played more than 350 games for the La Liga giants across all competitions.

Since his move to England, the 30-year-old has played more than 90 times for the Red Devils, forming a central defensive partnership alongside both Lisandro Martinez and, more recently, Harry Maguire.

It is claimed that the player’s contract, which is set to expire this summer, does include an option to extend by a further 12 months, but the Manchester club have opted not to activate it.

This season, the 2018 World Cup winner has been hampered by injuries, but has still made 30 appearances.

The recent arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS at Old Trafford hasn’t prompted a change in the club’s decision, with Varane still set to leave United at the end of the season.
