Manchester United are set to lock horns with German giants Bayern Munich over a deal for Benfica defender Nelson Semedo, according to reports from Portuguese outlet, Record.

The report claims that whilst the club’s president Luis Filipe Vieira was in England to meet with Old Trafford officials over a deal for Semedo’s teammate Victor Lindelof, there were also discussions about a move for the 23-year-old.

Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho appears determined to add some mettle to his back line in January as he looks to force his way back into the Premier League title race.

The former Chelsea boss has called into question his defenders this season, publicly criticising both Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw earlier this term.

The Portuguese has also neglected to use Italian right-back Matteo Darmian, opting for converted winger Antonio Valencia as his first choice. Whilst the 31-year-old is capable as a full-back, Mourinho may feel his compatriot offers a more specialist option.
