The Netherlands secured their place in the last 16 of the World Cup on Tuesday by beating holders Qatar.

Louis van Gaal’s side have started the tournament in good form, with forward Cody Gakpo particularly impressive so far.

The Dutch were among the favourites to lift the trophy at the end of December, and they will only have furthered their claims having cruised through Group A.

Now, though, it appears that one of Van Gaal’s players could be set for talks with Manchester United.

According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, The Red Devils are set to hold talks with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

Frimpong, 21, has been in fine form for his club side so far this season, making 21 appearances across all competitions.

The right-back, who can also be deployed on the right of midfield, has scored five goals and provided three assists already this term, and is regarded by many as one of the Bundesliga’s most impressive players so far this season.

United are looking for a right-back to provide competition for Diogo Dalot, who has established himself as the club’s first choice in his role over the past 12 months.

Wan-Bissaka has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford, having made just one appearance under Erik ten Hag, as a substitute against Liverpool.

Frimpong is contracted to Leverkusen until 2025, meaning his current side are under very little pressure to sell any time soon.

Despite that, it appears that United will begin talks in an attempt to lure the player to Manchester.

The Dutchman hasn’t started a game for the Netherlands yet at the World Cup, but United will wait until after the tournament has finished to begin talks.

United could also consider recalling fellow right-back Ethan Laird, who has been in sensational form while on loan at Championship club Queen’s Park Rangers.

The youngster was used regularly by Ten Hag during pre-season, before being sent on loan to QPR.

Ten Hag has already raided the Dutch top flight for several players including Lisandro Martinez and Antony, and it now appears that he may be considering a move for his fellow countryman, Frimpong.
