Manchester United have approached Lens about a possible move for wing-back Jonathan Clauss, according to reports.

As per The Evening Standard, the Frenchman is being chased by United as new manager Erik ten Hag looks to add to his squad ahead of his first season in English football.

Clauss, 29, has been watched by United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea for more than a year, the report states, but the Red Devils are now entering into the race to sign him.

The wing-back registered 16 combined goals and assists last term, and his fine form over the past two seasons earned him his international debut for France in March this year.

Man United and Chelsea are both interested in signing Clauss as a backup left-back

The report claims that both English clubs are interested in signing Clauss, but a move from either club would depend on them offloading current players first.

Chelsea have the likes of Emerson Palmieri, Kenedy and Marcos Alonso as current backup options to first choice left-back Ben Chilwell, although all three players have been linked with a move away from the club.

Cesar Azpilicueta has also agreed personal terms with Barcelona and looks likely to depart if the Spanish side offer Chelsea the £7 million that they are demanding.

United, meanwhile, are likely to offload both Alex Telles and Brandon Williams, which would leave Luke Shaw as their only left-back.

Clauss will be available for just £8 million according to the report, as he has only 12 months remaining on his contract with the French side.
