Manchester City defeated rivals Manchester United in a penalty shoot-out to lift the Community Shield on Saturday.

In a game of few chances, forward Alejandro Garnacho put the Red Devils ahead late on and looked likely to have earned Erik ten Hag’s side victory.

The Red Devils couldn’t hold on, though, and Bernardo Silva headed home to draw the Citizens level and send the tie to a shootout.

Silva then missed his spot-kick, before Jadon Sancho did the same for United, sending the shootout to sudden death.

Veteran central defender Jonny Evans then missed his penalty, allowing fellow centre-back Manuel Akanji to convert his and add yet another trophy to City’s cabinet.

In the wake of the defeat, it appears that United have reignited their interest in an England international.

As per Football Insider, United are set to launch a new offer for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

Branthwaite has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford for much of the summer

United had been heavily linked with a move for the Englishman and have already failed with bids to sign him this summer, but the report claims that the club have reopened talks with the Toffees about the possibility of a deal.

Branthwaite, 22, has made more than 50 appearances for Everton across all competitions, as well as spending time on loan at both Blackburn Rovers and PSV Eindhoven.

His impressive form last term earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad for the European Championships in Germany, but he was one of the seven players that was cut when the final squad was announced.

It is claimed that United are set to table a £60 million offer for the central defender in the coming days, in the hope of agreeing a deal before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.
