Manchester United followed up a flying 5-1 victory over Leeds with a slightly underwhelming 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday.

But despite failing to pick up a second win in as many matches at St Mary’s, the arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane will still give fans huge optimism for the season ahead.

One area of the team that came in for criticism from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the match was the midfield, in particular Fred.

The Norwegian boss told reporters: “It might be a little bit lucky it deflected off Fred but he shouldn’t have dangled his leg, he should’ve blocked that shot. So we need better reactions when we don’t get decisions.”

Solskjaer’s comments may have added to rumours that the Red Devils could add to their midfield ranks before the transfer window closes.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United are keen on Wolverhampton Wanderers star Ruben Neves.

Neves has played in both of Wolves’ Premier League fixtures this term.

However, the report claims that the Old Trafford outfit will only do a deal if they can secure the 24-year-old on for a knockdown fee.

The Molineux club are looking to bring in funds after taking a hit throughout the coronavirus crisis.

This means they are prepared to let go of their Portuguese pass master and have thought to placed a £40m price tag on his head.

But it’s claimed United are not willing to pay that figure so it seems they will wait to see if Wolves will lower their asking price before the August 31st deadline.
