Any permeating optimism at Old Trafford was washed away in a haze of blue and white.

The £73 million acquisition of Jadon Sancho, coupled with last season’s strong second placed finish had Manchester United fans preparing themselves for a long awaited return to the glory days.

Unfortunately, they were downed in London as Queen’s Park Rangers stunned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, hammering the Reds 4-2 at Loftus Road in a friendly.

Jesse Lingard continued his momentum from his impressive loan spell at West Ham United by opening the scoring after three minutes, only for Charlie Austin to equalise just four minutes later.

United regrouped at half time, but were soon bowled over by three quick fire goals by Lyndon Dykes (x2) and Moses Odubajo.

Youngster Antony Elanga pulled a goal back for United but it did nothing to change the result or the jovial atmosphere in West London.

While the defeat has no bearing on any competition, it still would have come as a shock for Solskjaer.

It’s also suggested more work is to be done in the transfer market and, according to 90min, United could be set to bolster their frontline by using Anthony Martial in a deal to bring Erling Haaland to Old Trafford.

Haaland is one of the sought after strikers on planet earth

Martial has spent seven seasons at Old Trafford after being signed by Louis van Gaal for £54 million from Monaco.

He has scored 55 goals in 167 Premier League matches for the Red Devils, but he has never really been able to fully convince at Old Trafford.

While the Frenchman has endured some lethal periods for United, he has often found himself competing with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Edison Cavani, and Mason Greenwood.

Sancho’s arrival has only made things harder for Martial meaning a new start at a new club could be of benefit for the 25-year-old.

Meanwhile, Haaland, 21, is one of the hottest players on the planet right now after hammering home 41 goals in 41 appearances for Borussia Dortmund last season and 57 in 59 since joining in December 2019.
