While players have put club rivalries aside for this summer’s European Championship, their scouts and transfer teams will be working harder than ever.

Manchester City and Manchester United are looking to refresh their squads as both respectively missed out on winning the Champions League and Europa League.

Pep Guardiola’s rampant City side won the Premier League for the third time in four seasons, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United recorded their best domestic season under the Norwegian.

Both appear to be one or two players away from mounting serious challenges on all fronts and both do not appear to be afraid to splash the cash after this summer’s tournament.

In fact, reports from Spanish outlet AS have suggested both of the Manchester clubs will battle to sign Real Madrid’s departing captain Sergio Ramos in what could be one of the most exciting transfers in years.

Sergio Ramos could not agree fresh terms at Real Madrid.

The 35-year-old will leave the Bernabeu after 16 years of service, after new contract talks fell flat.

He will be available on a free transfer, and while his best years are behind him, he will bring character, experience, leadership, grit, and of course, defensive quality.

United have been looking for a strong central defender to pair with and compliment Harry Maguire as Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have been unable to consistently star alongside the United captain.

Guardiola is blessed with options in central defence with Aymeric Laporte, Nathan Ake, John Stones, and the imperious Ruben Dias; however, if the City team lacks anything it is individuals with the nous, experience and charisma that can drive a team to success on the European stage.

No one knows how to succeed in Europe more than Ramos and his four Champions League titles prove this – a fact that would surely be attractive to City.

Whichever team is successful in signing him will have a serial winner in their ranks.
