Manchester City have completed their first signing of the January window having confirmed the acquisition of Julian Alvarez, however fans will have to wait to see the South American in action.

The club announced the signing via its official Twitter account, stating that the striker would join the club from Argentine side River Plate for a reported fee of £18.

The 22-year-old has committed to a five-and-a-half year deal with the Citizens, however he will remain in South America on loan until the end of the season.

The Argentine international has scored 36 goals and provided 25 assists in 96 appearances for River Plate, since making his debut in 2018.

Alvarez has had a successful 12 months, winning the Copa America and the Argentine top flight

He has quickly established himself as one of the most desirable talents in South America, and his goals were crucial to River Plate’s Argentine league title triumph last season.

The forward was also part of the Argentina squad that won the Copa America last summer.

Alvarez could be the answer to Pep Guardiola’s long standing desire to sign a striker, with the club having failed in efforts to lure Harry Kane to Manchester last summer.

The player will remain in his homeland until at least the summer, although his current manager spoke over the weekend and revealed that he is hopeful the player will remain there until December.
