Premier League clubs smashed several spending records on Tuesday, as the January transfer window came to an end.

Chelsea completed a British record £105 million move for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez, which took the total spend by Premier League clubs this season to a staggering £2.8 billion.

Other notable deadline day deals included Jorginho’s shock move from Chelsea to Arsenal, as well as Manchester United’s late loan move for Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer.

One club that were quiet throughout the January window was Manchester City, who only signed Argentinian youngster Maximo Perrone last month.

Now, though, the reigning Premier League champions are being linked with a move for a Premier League star.

According to The Mail, City are interested in a move for Leicester City midfielder James Maddison this summer.

The England international, who was injured during the World Cup in Qatar, is set to be out of contract next summer and City may therefore look to take advantage of the situation and secure a cheap deal.

The midfielder started this term in fine form, before injuries forced him out of action over the past couple of months.

Maddison, 26, has made more than 180 appearances for The Foxes since joining the club from Norwich City in 2018.

Maddison’s impressive season has been hampered by injuries

During that time, the midfielder has scored 52 goals and registered 36 assists, cementing his place as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders in recent seasons.

He looks increasingly likely to depart Leicester in the next 18 months, though, with the player showing no sign of wanting to extend his stay with the club.

Previously, Maddison has been linked with a number of other clubs including Arsenal, and the report does claim that other top flight clubs are interested in him.

City, meanwhile, are said to still be interested in Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham.

The Citizens’ need for a midfielder stems from uncertainty over the futures of both Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva.

The former is set to be out of contract at the end of the season, while Silva has requested to be able to leave The Etihad twice in the last two years and may well push for a move once again this summer.

Manager Pep Guardiola is also said to be keen on signing a player that can provide more goals from midfield, with Erling Haaland currently providing the vast majority of City’s goal scoring threat.
