Premier League leaders Manchester City are reportedly ready to meet the release clause of former Premier League midfielder Mikel Merino.

The ex-Newcastle United man has a £50 million clause included in his current deal with Real Sociedad, and City are thought to be so impressed with the midfielder that they are willing to pay it.

According to El Confidencial via the Manchester Evening News, the player is high on City’s list of transfer targets for the summer, and the Citizens are not put off by his substantial release clause.

The Spaniard joined the Magpies in 2017, initially on loan, but departed just weeks after making his move permanent, joining the La Liga side.

During his time in the north-east, the midfielder made 25 appearances across all competitions, and was praised for his performances.

Merino has been a regular for Sociedad this season

He has since continued to impress in Spain, and his performances seem to have caught the attention of City boss Pep Guardiola, who is now intent on making an offer for the player.

The 25-year-old has played 27 La Liga matches so far this term, scoring on three occasions and also providing four assists.

Merino’s current deal expires in 2025, while City will be on the lookout for a midfielder this summer with Fernandinho set to depart.
