Premier League outfit Manchester City are on the verge of sealing a £39.8 million deal for Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy, according to The Sun.

The 22-year-old left-back played a key role as Leonardo Jardim’s side ended Paris Saint-Germain’s four-year dominance of French football by winning the title by eight points of Unai Emery’s side this term.

The France international laid on five assists in 25 Ligue 1 appearances to help the club to the summit, and with six starts in the Champions League this term, he also impressed on Monaco’s run to the semi-finals, where they were then defeated by Juventus.

However, it looks like Mendy’s one-year stay at the Stade Louis II is coming to an end, as reports suggest that Pep Guardiola’s City are set to seal a mega-money deal for the defender this summer ahead of Manchester United and Chelsea, both of whom have also been linked with the 22-year-old.

The Citizens finished third in the Premier League this term but endured a trophyless campaign, which became Guardiola’s first ever in management.

And the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss knows he is under pressure to deliver at the Etihad Stadium next time round, and has moved to bolster his backline, which has at times struggled this term.

Although they conceded fewer goals than third place Liverpool and fifth place Arsenal, it is clear that defensively is where City have had the biggest problems this term, yet bringing in a player of the calibre of Mendy will go some way to bolstering their backline, and perhaps help turn them into genuine title contenders.
